If you are hesitant to practice dog training with your dog because they are already an adult, possibly elderly, please note that the use of gentle methods allows for dog training at any age, of the puppy to the senior citizen. Many of my clients' dogs are over eight years old and they learn just as well as young puppies.
If your dog presents a hearing problem, the work is entirely possible, though a bit longer. This is by using an appropriate method and complementary accessories, like a (harmless) vibrating collar or a lighted clicker. In over 12 years in the profession, I've had the opportunity to train about ten of them with good results.
I also want to point out that, although in a way my role consists of making my clients' daily lives easier, I will refuse any request that is not in the best interest of the animal. Therefore, I prohibit any use of electric collars, choke/prong collars, or «pet correctors».
